Portable and compact
Its small size makes it great for trips, family get-togethers and parties. It sets up fast and can be played almost anywhere for hours of fun.
Easy to learn
Great for all ages, Shut the Box is simple enough for kids to understand and still a challenge for adults. Play alone or in a group, which makes it perfect for any game night.
Everything you need
The set comes with a wooden game board and two dice, so you can start playing right out of the box.
Why choose the Shut the Box Dice Game?
Builds math skills
It is a great way to practice basic math and keep number skills sharp in a fun, hands-on way.
Boosts strategic thinking
Players have to think about which tiles to flip, which builds problem solving and critical thinking.
Great for playing together
Shut the Box gets everyone talking, taking turns and enjoying some friendly competition.
Perfect for all ages
Whether your child is just learning numbers or you are an adult looking for a fun way to pass the time, Shut the Box is for everyone.
How to play
Basic instructions:
-
Set up:
- Place the game board on a flat surface.
- Make sure all the numbered tiles (1-9) are flipped up.
-
Goal:
- Flip down all the tiles to "shut the box."
-
Play:
- Players take turns rolling the two dice.
- After rolling, add the two dice together.
- Flip down tiles that add up to the total. For example, if you roll a 3 and a 4 (total 7), you can flip tile 7 or any tiles that add up to 7 (like 3 and 4, 5 and 2, or 6 and 1).
-
Winning:
- The game ends when a player can't flip down any more tiles that match the roll.
- The player with the fewest tiles still up at the end of their turn wins.
Ways to play at different ages:
Younger kids (ages 3-5):
- Use just one die to keep it simple.
- Flip only one tile per turn so it is easier to follow.
- Focus on counting and number recognition instead of adding.
Older kids (ages 6-8):
- Use the standard two-dice rules.
- Practice simple addition by finding different ways to reach the total.
Advanced players (ages 9 and up):
- Add multiplication or subtraction rules for a bigger challenge.
- Let players roll again if they flip tiles that match the first roll, for more strategy and skill.
